National Adoption Day brings together new families

News

(WTNH) — Thirteen-year-old Rosanna and two-year-old Juniel are now officially part of their forever family. The siblings are just two of more than 70 children adopted in Connecticut Friday as part of National Adoption Day.

Yolanda Soto took the siblings in last year after their birth mother could no longer care for them. Yolanda was a long time family friend and a familiar face to the children.

“It takes a person with patience, a kind heart and a big enough heart for two more,” said Rosanna.

“Our goal of course is to keep the families together, that’s what we try to do here. When unfortunately we’re not successful it is really rewarding to see such a happy outcome,” said Judge Shelley Marcus.

Judge Marcus oversees many adoptions at the New Haven Juvenile Court. DCF says each year between 450 and 500 kids are adopted out of the system.

“All adoptions are special and we do them ongoing through the course of the year. But, of course we always look forward to National Adoption Day where we get to celebrate,” said Judge Marcus.

As Rosanna and Juniel were adopted today, friends and family looked on. Several members of the DCF staff were also on hand to congratulate the new family. Rosanna says other children in similar situations should not give up hope.

“It’s gonna happen. Just wait. It’s going to. You might be as lucky as me with this big family,” said Rosanna.
