Matthew Martinez, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, took part in a full day of activities with RPD and Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia Sunday.
The 9-year-old from Troy, Virginia says his wish comes from his admiration for the SWAT team.
“I watch SWAT members on Lego videos and they are so neat,” he said. “I want to wear all the SWAT gear and I want them to teach me how to be like them. I want to be part of the SWAT team for the day to get the bad guys.”
Martinez took part in a swearing-in ceremony at the RPD Training Academy.
He was also transported in SWAT vehicles to the training facility where SWAT officers showed him how to handles K-9’s and fly their drones — all while decked out in SWAT gear.
“He’s just living a dream,” said Michael Martinez, Matthew’s father. “This is what he wanted to be. He wanted to be a SWAT team member and having the opportunity to do it. He really is a SWAT team member, he was sworn in, he’s training right now. What more could you ask for?”
