NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – The New Haven Police Department will host a Gun Buy-back event on Saturday, August 6, 2016 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the New Haven Police Academy at 710 Sherman Parkway.

The Police Department is teaming up with the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of New Haven and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital Injury Prevention Program. The goal is to take dangerous weapons off the streets and potentialy out of the hands of criminals.

The buy-back program is in exchange for gift cards. Bring in a working firearms and you could get a get card from American Express or Stop & Shop. $50, for a rifle or shotgun. $100 for a pistol or handgun. $200 for an assault weapon to be determined by the NHPD.

If you plan on turning in a gun, it must be unloaded, in clear plastic bags, and any ammunition must be delivered in a separate bag. Police say, the person dropping off the gun will not be charged with illegal possession of that specific firearm. No questions asked, no identification will be required, and all individuals will remain anonymous.
