MIDLAND, MI (WTNH)– Planet Fitness is trending after one of their gym’s in Michigan canceled a woman’s membership after she would not stop complaining about a transgender woman in the locker room.

Mlive.com reports that a Midland woman was told she wasn’t welcome at the Planet Fitness gym after she refused to stop telling fellow members that a man was using the woman’s locker room.

The incident first occurred on February 28th, when Yvette Cormier first took her complaint to the front desk. After she was told by the front desk that the individual identifies as a woman, Cormier then took her complaint to the gym’s corporate office.

True to their slogan “Judgement Free Zone,” Planet Fitness said they would not tell the person to stay out of the women’s locker room and that members can use the locker room that corresponds with their gender identity.

Cormier disagreed with that policy, so when she returned to the gym, Mlive reports that she then told other women about the transgender individual in the locker room. Upon learning this, Planet Fitness’s corporate office called Cormier and told her she was violating their “no judgement” policy. After she refused to agree to stop talking about the transgender individual, a Planet Fitness representative told Cormier that she was no longer welcome at the gym.

Planet Fitness released a statement of the issue saying:“Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity. The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was cancelled.”

Cormier told Mlive that she felt Planet Fitness was being one-sided and that it was a safety issue. She also said that the gym should have a third locker room for transgender people.

The gym’s locker room does offer private changing stalls and bathroom stalls with doors.
