Automatic recounts ordered for 2 Connecticut House Districts

Politics

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Secretary of the State Denise Merrill‘s office announced Wednesday that two Connecticut house districts will have automatic recounts due to their close finishes.

Recounts are automatically required when results show the margin of victory to be less than ½ of 1 percent of votes cast for that office, or less than twenty votes. In the event of a recount for statewide office, the standard would be less than ½ of 1 percent of votes cast, but not more than 2,000 votes, according to a statement released by Merrill’s office Wednesday.

The two districts that are subject to automatic recounts are:House District 99 – Representing East Haven

James Albis (D / Inc.) – 5,004

Steve Tracey (R) – 4,990House District 103 – Representing Cheshire, Southington, and Wallingford

Liz Lineham (D) – 5,471

Andrew Falvey (R) – 5,417

According to the Secretary of the State’s office, the process of recounts is facilitated by the head moderator of each town, who has five business days to complete the recount. The deadline for any recounts resulting from the November 8th election will be November 16th because of the Veteran’s Day holiday this Friday.

In East Haven this is republican candidate Steve Tracey’s first time running for office.

“It was really close. I didn’t think it was gonna be close. I really thought I was gonna beat him,” said Tracey. “We knocked on doors every single day for three or four hours a day. I really just thought that, I mean, I don’t think we got to enough people but the people we got to were unbelievable.”

Tracey is up against democratic incumbent James Albis who has held the seat since 2011.

“The machines are very accurate. I don’t expect the recount is gonna change anything. I’m confident that I’ll be representing East Haven for the next two years,” said Albis.

In District 103 democratic candidate Liz Linehan is confident the numbers will remain in her favor.

“This district has historically been republican leaning, but I went in with my message of bipartisanship and I knew that it was resonating with voters so I knew it was going to be close, but as the numbers came in we started to, it was a nail biter. But, we started to feel more and more confident,” said Linehan.

Republican candidate Andrew Falvey came out on top in his hometown of Cheshire but failed to win in the other two towns. He’s not admitting defeat until the recount is over.

“Election night we thought we knew what was going on and the numbers weren’t in my favor at that point. We woke up this morning and said, oh boy, it’s still Election Day, we’re not done,” said Falvey.

District 99 will hold their recount on Saturday. Southington said they will recount on Thursday afternoon. Wallingford and Cheshire have yet to announce recount times.
