Bizarre Election has Voting Officials expecting unexpected

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — It’s been an election year that is anything but normal.

“We have had record registration, so this all points to a big turnout and that is the thing we election administrators need to manage,” said Denise Merrill, Connecticut Secretary of the State.

One thing the election has not been short of is emotion. Tempers have flared at rallies across the nation.

“It’s just such an upsetting year, honestly. People are so worked up about everything, there is a lot of things fanning the flames. A lot of conspiracy theories about elections among other things,” said Merrill.

When it comes to polling places, several security measures are in place in case problems pop up.

“We are ready, as ready as we can be for whatever happens. For years now we of course work with the FBI,” said Merrill.

An emergency management plan is in place for every town and city, with every election official.

On Election Day, thousands of calls flood the Secretary of State’s office, everything from breaking campaign laws to alleged violations within polling places.

A team is in place to respond.

“The bar association has signed up about 100 attorneys all across the state who are willing to go and be our eyes and ears encase there really is something serious going on,” said Merrill.
