A former congressman and a past president of the University of New Haven has passed away.

The Hartford Courant reports that (https://cour.at/2obmNLH) 80-year-old Lawrence “Larry” DeNardis died Friday after being hospitalized for a short period of time.

DeNardis served as both an educator and as a politician. He held multiple roles as an educational leader before being appointed as the fifth president of the University of New Haven, serving from 1991 until 2004.

DeNardis also found success as Republican politician, defeating then-Democratic State Senator Joe Lieberman in 1980 to win a congressional seat previously held for 22 years by a Democrat.

In a statement, Senate Republican President Pro Tempore Len Fasano said:

“Larry was a class act who was deeply respected by Republicans and Democrats alike. I was fortunate to know him and work with him, and I admired him for his ability to bring people together. Larry loved Connecticut and he had a passion for public service. We are saddened by his loss and our thoughts and prayers are with the DeNardis family.”
