However, the speech won’t be just focused on the people in the audience. This is a chance for the White House to reach out to Americans who aren’t following the day-to-day politics of D.C.
The President will have a chance to make the case to the public, after one year in office, that he believes the country is heading in the right direction.

President Trump is hopeful his first State of the Union address will have an impact on both Congress and the public, and White House sources say that’s why the President will focus on three key goals: Rebuilding America’s infrastructure, passing comprehensive immigration reform, and investing in the nation’s economy.
“I think what’ll you see tonight is a very exciting speech by the President who is going to share the boundless optimism he has for the future of this country,” stated Marc Lotter who served as a former adviser to President Trump.
That future, the White House hopes, will include a bipartisan deal to rebuild America’s infrastructure. The President will ask Congress and private companies to invest a trillion dollars in the idea.
But Gary Nordlinger, a political science professor with George Washington University, says so far, the White House hasn’t built enough support for the plan.
“I think the biggest problem he’s having there is getting any agreement on how to fund it,” Nordlinger explained.Related Content: Lawmakers sending their own messages during Trump’s speech
