What recreational marijuana's legality in Massachusetts may mean for Connecticut

Northampton, Mass. (WTNH) - Dozens of television stations from around New England surrounded one of the first marijuana dispensaries to be opening their doors Tuesday morning, as the Rocky Mountain high meets New England.

Ben Levy said all the excitement is just hype!

“Even though there is a buzz, and people are talking about it, I don’t think it’s going to be a big explosion of anything different,” he stated.

New England Treatment Access In Northampton, Mass. will be one of the first stores to sell pot legally in Massachusetts. Amanda Rositano is the director of compliance and said they have a wide variety of types to choose from.

“We have over 160 products available, and those products range from cannabis flowers to tinctures, topicals, edibles, like chocolate bars, and the chews,” she explained.

The store is ready for the long lines, and has tight security. They will be scanning IDs to make sure they are real and everyone buying is over 21. Rositano says they expect to sell a fair share of cannabis to out-of-staters. That includes people from Connecticut.

“If you are going to purchase cannabis in Massachusetts, you need to consume that cannabis here in Massachusetts and we will tell you not to cross state lines,” she added.

For every person we talked to who was excited about marijuana, there were at least two others who said it's a waste of breath. Skyler Johnson was concerned about his family.

“He is more prone to use it, my own son. And he has a bright future ahead of him. I don’t want that to corrupted,” Johnson said.

So does this mean recreational marijuana could be headed to Connecticut? We already have medical marijuana, how hard would it be to switch over? We talked to a dispensary in Connecticut, and they said not difficult at all. They already have a system in place.
