Republican-led state budget plan adds weight on some students’ minds


NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Potential cuts to higher education is weighing on students’ minds at Gateway Community College.

The Republican plan that passed the House and Senate last week will eliminate thousands of scholarships for the state’s neediest students.Related Content: Disputes over education funding causes budget bickering to get worse

“It’s a big difference between me finishing and me not being able to [finish school],” stated student Cameron Random. “Of course, finances definitely helps and assists.”

“While people give lip service to the idea of economic development and the future economy where the only jobs that will be available are jobs that require high-level skill and education,” explained State Senator Martin Looney. “That proposal undermines our ability to educate our students.”
