EAST HADDAM, Conn. (WTNH) — Residents living along the Connecticut River are still waiting for the U.S. Coast Guard cutters to break through the ice.

The cutters only made it a couple of miles north of Essex.

The Coast Guard says two of the cutters are down and that another brought in from Boston is also down. It says another cutter is in working order but that one is currently at a dock in Essex on standby in the event of an emergency.Related Content: Coast Guard continues to clear up ice jams

It’s been a very popular destination for sight-seeing over the past few days,

“I brought them down after school just to see the baby chunks of ice and how beautiful it is and layered on top of each other and how thick it is,” explained Kimberley Migliacci of Haddam.

“We are really up high, the river’s right in our back yard,” said Joe Wilson of Rocky Hill. “There’s a 40-foot bank and train tracks and then another 40-foot bank and water can’t get to us in Rocky Hill but look at this, this is a lot of ice!”Related Content: Boarding school to reopen after evacuating due to floods

Right now, residents are worried about flooding. It is not yet clear when the ice-breaking operation will happen.
