Silver Sands State Park to reopen in Milford following fire

News

Just three days after a fire destroyed the new buildings under construction, Silver Sands State Park in Milford is reopening Friday. What is left of those building is still off-limits.

Not much of a beach day Friday, but I know from being here in the past, that will not stop some locals from walking the beach here. You will not be allowed to get anywhere close to the wreckage of the new buildings that burned down in a suspicious fire on Tuesday.

The 9 million dollar project to build bathrooms and a concession stand was set to open this coming Memorial Day. Instead they went up in smoke late Tuesday night.

The project had been controversial. Many in town were against the idea of expanding the park, fearing it would bring in crowds from other parts of the state and possibly lead to the state charging admission. That controversy means state officials are now looking into whether this fire could have been set.

But it was also a construction site, where crews were allegedly doing interior painting on Tuesday with space heaters going inside to keep warm. Regardless of what caused the fire, it destroyed the building.

The fear was there might be some environmental impact, but the bulk of the damage seems to have been contained to the site, with no runoff, so folks will be allowed to use the main parking area and the beach.

The boardwalk to the beach is closed, and the part around the fire scene is fenced off, so you cannot go there.

We are still waiting on the official investigation report from the State Police about what started the fire.
