Start of ski season kicks off earlier than usual for the state

If you’re looking to hit the slopes to ski or snowboard, you’re in luck. Many of the resorts here in our state are opening up earlier than usual, thanks to mother nature.

All is quiet there Friday morning but Saturday will be a much different story when Mt. Southington opens for the season.

The bitter cold we saw last week, coupled with the snow storm the week before that, was beneficial for all the ski areas across the state. They were able to turn those snow guns on and make snow.

At Mount Southington, they’ve been making snow when the overnight temps dip down into the 20’s.
There are mounds that groomers will level out and spread out Friday in preparation for Saturday

So far, mother nature is cooperating. This is the earliest many of the slopes have been able to open in years. They usually like to be up and running for Christmas when a lot of people are on vacation.

In fact, that week accounts for roughly 25-percent of the yearly revenue at many ski resorts.

Mowhawk Mountain opened up last week. People hit the slopes over the long holiday weekend.
All of which is good for business and the local economy.

So here’s a break down of opening dates.

Keep in mind that the slopes are just open on the weekends for right now and opening dates are always subject to change depending on the weather.
