State lawmakers tour female-run businesses to help other women succeed

MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Becoming CEO of Protein Sciences wasn’t the plan for Manon Cox when she came to Meriden’s Protein Sciences 18 years ago, but it became the plan 3 years ago when she earned the position.

“At Christmas parties, the younger girls want to take pictures with me and I’m like what is going on? But, I definitely think it’s makes a difference for them,” said Cox.

Just about a month ago, The US Census Bureau reported 17% of all businesses in the state are owned by women, but in the past 2 years 25% of all the new businesses are run by women. Cox says that’s encouraging, but there is work to do.

“I think it would be very helpful to have networking events instead of mentoring systems, because as you see more women as role models ahead of you, you might think that that is also possible for you,” Cox said.

“Part of today’s tour is to listen and learn,” said State Sen. Dante Bartolomeo (D). “We primarily are the caretakers for our children to get them to and from daycare and places. So, it’s really, really hard.”

Bartolomeo toured Protein Sciences along with four other female state senators. She says 51% of the population is made up by women. So, they’re touring 3 different women run businesses today to see how they can help other women succeed.

Cox said if believe in your goals, you can achieve them. She now oversees 100 employees in Meriden and another Location in New York. Their flu vaccine, egg-free preservative-free, Flublok is FDA approved. Now, they’re tackling the Zika Virus and Rabies.

“The FDA took a long time to approve the technology that we’re using and now that they’ve done that for Flublok, we expect the next one to be much quicker,” said Cox.
