Statistics show 1 in 4 women, 1 in 7 men victims of domestic violence

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — News 8 reached out to both police and advocate groups to learn more about how domestic violence impacts our state.

The Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence says in 2016 it served more than 39,000 victims, offering things like counseling services, sheltering and court assistance.

Statistics show one in four women and one in seven men are victims of domestic violence.

In New Haven during 2017, there have been five homicides, one of which a result of domestic violence. New Haven Police say Saturday’s shooting easily could have been the second, but training and quick responses from both the victim and police helped prevent that.Related Content: Officers released from hospital after Saturday shooting in New Haven; suspect in custody

“This is a reminder of what our officers do every day, “explained New Haven Police Assistant Chief Otoniel Reyes. “This is the danger that police officers face on an everyday basis and domestic violence situations are probably one of the most volatile situations that an officer can respond to…”

Last year, News 8’s Scott McDonnell took a closer look at domestic violence and the risk it poses to officers.

Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara says emotions run high in domestic violence situations and can often be redirected toward those officers responding.

Officers go through extensive training on assessing domestic situations to determine how much risk remains in the home and if they need to reach out to an advocate.
