Students get unique perspective to help escape house fire

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Students at Worthington Hooker School in New Haven spending part of their day in a camper. The valuable lesson — fire safety.

“Talking about it is one thing, but seeing it and going through the motions is a whole other experience,” said Robert Doyle, fire marshal with the New Haven Fire Department.

The department has been using a smoke trailer for some 20 years. Traveling all over the city, giving people a unique perspective. The trailer fills with a thick white fog, meant to simulate smoke. It doesn’t take long for the visibility to drop. It’s allowing kids to see what it would be like in their own house if a fire breaks out. It may seem simple, but it doesn’t take much to get disoriented. Kids feeling there way around

“You see a lot of fright through faces in these kids,” said Ray Saracco with the New Haven Fire Dept. “It makes an impact on them.”

The big piece of advice when there’s smoke is to get down low and get out of the house.

“That’s where the air is. That’s where you’re going to breath, but if you don’t practice in situations that are under control then in an emergency forget about it,” said Doyle.

While smoke is very often the cause of injury or death in a house fire, there are many other things families should be discussing. Such as:

  • Working smoke detectors
  • How to call 911
  • Having an escape plan
  • Figuring out a meeting spot after an escape to make sure everyone is out safely.

“Real life events. Situations that can really happen in your home,” said Saracco.
