NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — This year News 8 is celebrating its 70th anniversary and we’re spotlighting organizations who also have a strong history in Connecticut.
The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven was established in 1928 and since then has helped those in need get access to food, healthcare, education and more.
The organization manages more than a thousand funds worth $620 million that has been contributed by three generations of families for the benefit of the community.
This year The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is celebrating a big milestone: 90 years since being established.
“There were three Community Foundations in Connecticut started in the 20s – Waterbury, Hartford and New Haven,” said William Ginsberg, the president and CEO.
Today there are more than 750 Community Foundations across the United States.
“We’re one of the say 40 or so largest and probably one of the 40 or so oldest as well,” Ginsberg said.
Through grants, The Community Foundation helps support hundreds of nonprofits and projects that serve the public, making it the largest grant maker in a 20-town region.
“It’s not just about distributions,” Ginsberg said. “We’re raising money on an ongoing basis and this remains a very generous community.”
Through initiatives like the Great Give — held every year in May — The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven raises more than a million dollars each year.
“So much of what defines the community and what defines the strength of the community is in our nonprofit sector,” Ginsberg said. “The non-profit sector really embodies what we value as a people.”
The Community Foundation has also helped spark new initiatives, like New Haven Healthy Start, a program that addresses infant mortality, or the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, an annual event that features performing artists from around the world.
“One of our themes for our 90th is ‘there from the start’ because The Foundation has not only supported so many things over time, but has created so many,” Ginsberg said.
After nine decades of service, The Community Foundation’s message is ‘community now more than ever.’
“There’s a lot going on that I think is threatening to the sense of community, the connection that people, have so we’re doubling down and saying to our community, more than ever this is the moment to step forward for your community,” Ginsberg explained.
