The only known pilgrim ever to be buried in Connecticut

News

Many give credit to the Pilgrims who came over on the Mayflower for giving us the Thanksgiving tradition.

Well, one of those Pilgrims — Issac Allerton, is buried underneath the New Haven Green and is the only Pilgrim on record to be buried here in CT.

“Issac Allerton was one of the original settlers of the Plymouth Colony coming over on the mayflower and was actually the fifth to sign the mayflower compact that established the colony”, says Jason Bischoff-Wurstle, Director of Photo Archives at the New Haven Museum.

After handling the colonies finances, he was believed to have driven them deeper into debt and kicked out of the Plymouth colony.

He eventually made his way to the New Haven Colony which at the time was not yet part of Connecticut
