Things to know for boating season

News

NOANK, Conn. (WTNH)–Boater safety week began on Saturday, and it’s just in time for what will be a busy boating week with Memorial Day coming up next weekend.

Life jackets are a must, as most boating deaths are due to drowning.

“90 percent of drowinings, those people are not wearing life jackets,” said Yolanda Cooley of the DEEP. For manually operated vessels like kayaks or canoes, you are required to wear them from October first until the end of May.

“You do not realize how quickly your hands do not work and you cannot put a life jacket on,” Cooley said.

Things like flares are required in federal waters, while other things are recommended like a marine radio and first aid kit. Passengers need to know where they are.

Cooley said that it doesn’t cost anything to have an inspector check out your boat.

Vessel safety checks are usually done before the boat is put into the water. That way they can make sure there are no invasive species catching a ride on the hull of the boat. Speaking of invasive species we’re told if you have a kayak or canoe make sure that you clean it well because you don’t want to be spreading around those invasive species either.
