Too Early For Snow?

News

(WTNH) — A little taste of winter in our forecast for Connecticut, but it seems like only yesterday we were wearing shorts and hanging out at the beach. Has it felt like our weather typically goes straight from summer to winter and skips right over fall? Is it really too early for us to see flakes flying?

Scenes of winter me shiver….I’m far from ready for snow but whether you want it or not, it’s coming before you know it. So when do we “normally” see measurable snowfall in Connecticut? CLICK HERE an interactive map from climate.gov showing when our average first snowfall date is.

Here’s the interesting thing, according to the last 30 years, we’re actually right on schedule with our first measurable snowfall. It’s important to note that measurable snowfall refers to snow as little as .1 inches! Up in the northwest hills, the typical first snow is seen somewhere from as early as mid September to the middle of October. In and around Hartford, we see snow late in the month of October, and the shoreline averages snow early to mid November.

So does this mean we’ll likely see our first snowstorm along the shoreline within the next 3 weeks? Not necessarily. Mother Nature doesn’t always follow the rules so we’ll have to watch and see what the near future holds! The point is, even though we think about leaves falling during Autumn, it’s not the only thing reaching the ground this time of the year.
