Unexpected amount of snow, accident cause cleanups in southeastern Connecticut

NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) — Up to six inches of snow fell in southeastern Connecticut much to the surprise of many. John LeVangie didn’t expect to see this much snow when he woke up Tuesday morning but it didn’t bother him.

“This doesn’t take long,” said LeVangie who was shoveling his driveway in Norwich.

“Thought it was going to be a dusting,” said his neighbor Robert Groner who was using a snow blower to clear his driveway. “Pretty heavy dusting.”

Not that they’re complaining.

“Like I say I’m retired anyway so every day is Saturday,” said LeVangie.

Still the snow did cause concerns for those who had to go to work.

“It was really slippery early this morning,” said LeVangie.

Tractor trailer trucks slid into trouble on I-95 and Interstate 395 in southeastern Connecticut.

News8’s Mobile Weather Lab passed one tractor trailer accident on I-95 in East Lyme where only the left lane was open, while a viewer sent in a Report It picture of a jackknifed tractor trailer in Old Saybrook, and News8 was also in Norwich where a tractor trailer hit the median shutting down the southbound side of I-395.

“Just have to go slow. You can’t go a hundred miles an hour,” said plow driver John Daigneault.

He sees a lot during his travels.

“Couple of spin outs there’s one back down the road there a ways,” said Daigneault.

Most areas along the shoreline saw up to six inches of the white stuff but it was easy to move around.

“It’s not that heavy,” said LeVangie. “It’s actually kind of light.”

Daigneault says the lighter snow makes his job easier. “Yeah cause I can pile it up higher,” he explained.
