West Haven man charged for illegally collecting on unemployment

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Following an investigation into a complaint by the Connecticut Department of Labor, a West Haven man was arrested and charged for illegally collecting nearly $11,000 in unemployment compensation benefits.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Cornelius Harge was taken in by Inspectors from the Unemployment Compensation Fraud Unit in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney. He faces charges of one count each of larceny in the first-degree and felony unemployment compensation fraud.

Harge is accused of fraudulently collecting approximately $10,620 in unemployment benefits from March through July 2014 when investigation showed he was working for an insulation contractor. Harge was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court on Sept. 8, 2016.
