If the American flag you have displayed is worn out, faded or torn, it’s time to take it down.

But what’s the proper way to dispose of it?

Burn it.

“It is the preferred method in the flag etiquette book,” says Larry Brundrett, Commander of VFW Post 2096 in Madison. “It states that the flag shall be either burned or buried, but the preferred method is burning.”

You can contact your local VFW or American Legion to drop off your flag. The posts for each in Madison collect flags and hold ceremonies throughout the year.

“It purifies the flag. It destroys anything that’s there so it can’t be reused, and it’s a safe and ceremonious way to dispose of it.”
