Why people think clowns are so creepy

News

HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Creepy clown sightings are being reported all over the nation. Some have been seen lurking in the woods, near schools, and on college campuses. In Newburgh, N.Y., a clown masked man was seen holding a BB gun on a bridge. Another clown spotted in Wayne, N.J., reportedly hiding in the woods.

Last night a report of a clown on the campus of Quinnipiac University in Hamden spread quickly with students via social media. Fear got the most of many students.

“Me and my roommates were walking to the car over there and one of us was walking backwards to watch the back and the other two were looking forward. We were literally spooked. The whole campus thought somebody was just gonna come out of nowhere and attack us,” said Senior Janessa Andiorio.

With clown chaos sweeping the nation Quinnipiac Professor of Sociology Lauren Sardi says while most people aren’t afraid of clowns, we’re programmed to think they’re creepy.

“If you think about some of these images we see over and over again in popular culture, I’m thinking Penny Wise from IT or the clown that drags the girl under the bed in Poltergiest or some of these other cult classic movies, you now, Killer Clowns from Outer Space,” said Sardi.

The short version she says i people just don’t like what we see. The underlying cause has much more to do with what we as people identify with.

“We as individuals though look for social cues in people’s faces and you just can’t, you can’t read a person when they have make-up all over their face in that way,” said Sardi.

Clowns have distorted features like big eyes and mouths, red noses and crazy hair. Experts say it’s deviant and our natural instinct is to dislike all these creepy clowns.

“I hope on Halloween when I go out I don’t run into any clowns because I promise I will scream and run the other way, even if it’s just a costume,” said Andiorio.

The threat at Quinnipiac was fortunately just a hoax.
