Woman dies following West River water rescue in New Haven

A woman has died after she was rescued from the West River in New Haven Thursday afternoon.

According to officials, a 37-year-old woman from West Haven was pulled from the West River at Edgewood Park in the area of Chapel Street on Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say the woman was found by a dog-walker and fire crews removed her from the water.

Police say the woman was not breathing when she was found, but had not been in the water long. They say there were no signs of trauma or foul play.

Medical care was administered at the scene and the woman was then transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where she was pronounced dead around 3:10 p.m.

According to officials, the woman’s family told investigators that she was a known drug user and was estranged from them for some time.
