A woman was killed in a fire at an apartment complex in Groton on Thursday morning. The woman has now been identified by the Groton Police Department on Sunday morning. 

Officials say the fire started at the Branford Manor Complex on Branford Avenue around 8:30 p.m. They responded to the call at 8:57 p.m. State Police were called to the scene to assist Groton police and firefighters on scene to investigate the cause and origin of the fire. 

According to the Groton Fire Chief, a woman was killed in the fire.

During fire suppression efforts, officials confirmed that there was a body found dead on the second floor of the complex. Police identified the victim as Anna Berroa, 31 of 146 Branford Avenue, Groton. The Chief Medical Examiner found she perished as a result of smoke inhalation from the fire in her home 

The cause of the fire is still being investigated. 

In addition to the apartment that was destroyed, three others were badly damaged. The fire chief says they’ve been condemned.

The families who live there are now getting help from the Red Cross.
