(WTNH) — If you’re a fan of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” you may have caught last Sunday’s episode.
During a report about jury selection in which Connecticut was featured, Oliver delivered a scathing sidebar smackdown about Danbury.
Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton doesn’t like anyone throwing shade at the Hat City. So, Boughton is fighting fire with fire.
“I know exactly three things about Danbury,” he said in a video posted on Facebook. “USA Today ranked it the second-best city to live in in 2015, it was once the center of the American hat industry and if you’re from there, you have a standing invite to come get a thrashing from John Oliver — children included — (expletive) you.”
Also, in the tongue-in-cheek video, he said the city planned to rename the local sewage treatment plant after him.
“We’re going to rename it the John Oliver Memorial Sewer Plant. Why? Because it’s full of crap. Just like you, John.”
Boughton told USA Today the rename was a joke.
It wasn’t exactly clear what prompted Oliver to go off on Danbury.
