Hartford Youth Service Corps celebrates 1 year

Good Morning CT at Nine

(WTNH)- August 9th marked the 1st anniversary of the Hartford Youth Service Corps (YSC), a program administrated by Our Piece of the Pie, that gives part-time employment to young men and women ages 16 to 24 – particularly those in disadvantaged situations due to gang involvement, recent incarceration, homelessness, and other issues.

In the year since it launched last August, YSC has seen more than 200 youth members perform more than 82,000 hours of work that has contributed to the revitalization of struggling neighborhoods through community service projects such cleaning up parks, helping seniors with removing snow and cleaning gutters, and working at after-school programs or early childhood centers

The ability of YSC to demonstrate success to its private funders (100% of the program is privately funded, largely by private foundations, companies and individual donors) is critically important to securing continued funding for the program, which helps alleviate the burden of supporting workforce development and neighborhood revitalization on Hartford’s already-overstressed operating budget.
