May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Dr. Campbell Stewart, UConn Health Dermatologist, explains what to look out for and how to protect yourself.

ABCDE’s of Melanoma:

A – Asymmetry
B – Border
C – Color
D – Diameter
E – Evolving

Sunscreen Tips:

SPF at least 30
Broad spectrum (UV-A and UV-B)
Water resistant
Preferably zinc-based
Creams better than lotions, wipes, and sprays
Reapply every 2 hours

What to Wear:

Sun-protective clothing is now available, often with an SPF rating. They are usually tightly woven but lightweight with ventilation. There are even some bathing suits are made from sun-protective fabric.
