Professional organizer, Stefanie Jones came to Good Morning Connecticut to talk about some easy ways to have a less cluttered holiday.
Jones said if you feel overwhelmed by the idea of more things coming into your home, consider filling a donation bag before Santa arrives. A helpful way to encourage kids to partake is to tell them they need to make room for the items they’re asking for. Have kids fill bag with items they no longer play with, or need, or want. This can be toys, clothing, shoes or coats.
It is so easy to overspend / overbuy. With almost everything available online it’s even harder now to keep track of what was purchased, when it’s arriving. Jones says to try to stick to something a person wants, needs, something to wear or something to read. Jones categorizes her gift list like this and it prevents her from buying too many items or things that really aren’t necessary. Another tip, mark down when gifts are arriving, when they are wrapped and who they are from.
With decorations, Jones says to only buy what you have space to display and store. If you truly love and need it, think of what you’d remove from you collection before buying. Use clear storage, even ziplock baggies are great, labeled. Ornament storage is one of the most difficult, especially if you decorate with delicate or handmade ornaments. Jones recommends a storage container as it can store numerous ornaments, and is adjustable.
Lastly, cards. With the majority of people doing photo cards, it’s easy to feel guilty throwing them away, but then they can just become clutter. Jones says
