(WTNH)- Targeting those abdominal muscles is common for many when they head to the gym but are doing crunches or curl-ups good for your spine?
Health and Fitness Specialist, Eanna Rushe came to Good Morning Connecticut to explain why these type of repetitive bending may not be good for your back. He said the moves can increase the risk of lower back injury.
Rushe said there are more effective ways to train your core that don’t necessarily put stress on the spine.
– Gym ball Roll out – this exercise targets the anterior or front muscles of the core
-Suitcase carry – this exercise targets the side muscles or lateral structures of the core
-Tornado ball swing – this is a challenging, high demand exercise that challenges your entire core. It has great application to sports where you are constantly bracing your core for stability.
