Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro talks childhood on Wooster Street


(WTNH)–Third district congresswoman Rosa DeLauro grew up in Wooster Square. Her parents were both on the Board of Alders for years and years, and her mother Luisa is, to this day, the longest-serving alderperson in history. She served from 1965 to 1999.

Congresswoman DeLauro has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 25 years. She came on “Nyberg” to talk about those wonderful times in Wooster Square, where every one of her neighbors was considered a part of the family.

And as part of our special “Italian Week” coverage, we are featuring a favorite Italian recipe from each of our “Nyberg” guests. DeLauro brought her mom’s cream puffs recipe. (By the way, her mom is 101 years old).Luisa DeLauro’s Cream Puffs:

1 cup boiling water

1 stick of butter or margarine

1 cup flour

4 eggs

Boil water and butter, add flour, mix well, add eggs one at a time.

Form tiny balls 3/4″ (they will double in size).

Bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes, puffs should be golden brown.More Italian in Connecticut:

Italian Cream:

5 tablespoons sifted flour

1/3 cup sugar

2 egg yolks

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 cups scalded milk

1 teaspoon butter or margarine

Sift flour, add sugar, add eggs one at a time. Beat until smooth, add vanilla, pour in hot milk, stir constantly until thick, add butter. Cool before filling puffs.
