Back to school gadgets parents will love

Stretch Your Dollar

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) Your kids are probably already asking for the latest and greatest. Parents know it’s hard to say no if you don’t have an alternative, which is why we found some for you that may also make your life easier this school year.

Going back to school may sometimes also feel like “Keeping up with the Joneses.” Kids want the latest and greatest school supplies and clothes, but it’s the gadgets that’ll really cost you. Tech expert Keith Atchinson says before you buy your young kids an apple watch or smart phone, so they can reach you when practice is over, consider a Gizmo watch.

“It’s kind of like a smart watch that they get to wear on their wrist, so they’re excited about wearing a smart watch,” Atchinson said.

Parents like it because it’s less expensive than smart phones overall, but also safer. There’s a GPS locator on it and the parents download an app to control who the child can contact.

“The great thing about it from a parent’s standpoint is it allows children to text pre-selected phone numbers, so the parent can select the phone numbers that the child can communicate with,” he said.

If your older kids have a phone already, another device to consider is the MOPHI.

It’s a phone case that also prevents the excuse they ‘couldn’t call you because their battery died.’

“When your internal battery on your phone goes low all you do is flip a switch and this MOPHI cell phone case has its own power pack in it,” he added.

If you are looking for a tablet. He says cheaper is not always better. You may have limited space or may be limited to the apps you have access to. If your older child needs a new laptop this year consumer reports rated what they think are the best laptops for students.
