Stretch Your Dollar: How to check if your home is ready for winter

Stretch Your Dollar

The temperature has dropped big time this week and Gil is talking about snow later on this week. We are stretching your dollar with how you can check if your home is ready for old man winter.

It’s only a matter of time. The snow and freezing temperatures are coming which makes now a good time to ask if your house is ready?

There are a number of steps you can take now  to save time and money later.

Consumer Reports says number one is to protect those indoor pipes. One estimate says a burst pipe could cause $5,000 in damage.

Consumer Reports suggests insulating pipes, is an inexpensive way to protect them and consider insulating your attic or crawl space. The goal here is to keep heat where you need it in your living area.

Make sure you check your chimney and furnace. One or both may need servicing and you want to tackle those before winter.

Other tips include putting in storm windows and don’t forget the area outside the house. Take a look around to see if any of your trees have dead branches.

Snow and ice can accumulate quickly and bring down branches and that could cause extensive damage to your home.
