The UConn athletic department is trying something different this year–road tripping with its coaches! They have four stops this week, and on Tuesday, they were at Stony Creek Brewery in Branford.
The coaches got to spend time with fans, alumni and others. Geno Auriemma, Dan Hurley, Randy Edsall, field hockey coach Nancy Stevens and men’s golf coach Dave Pezzino were all mingling with the crowd.
Athletic Director David Benedict was there, too.
It’s the first year the school has done this, and it seemed to be received well.
“It’s really neat that we get out and see a lot of these people. I just had somebody come over and say, ‘Coach, how are we gonna be next year? Are we going to win? The last two years have been really bad,” Geno Auriemma said. “So I go, ‘Boy, am I glad we’re doing these trips, you know?'”
“I would say the number one thing that I’ve heard is, ‘You better win quickly,” Hurley said, laughing. “We’re not real patient. And then number two would be, they’re excited to see a team that’s gonna really battle.”
“We get a chance to come out and thank the fans in person in their hometowns, or in the areas close to where they’re from,” Edsall said. “They come and support us so much and now it’s a chance for us to come and say thanks in a relaxed setting, where they can ask questions and we can talk with them,” Edsall said.
The coaches will be in New York City on Wednesday, and Thursday, they’ll make their final stop at the UConn-Stamford campus.
