UConn football’s Jones, Washington out for season to focus on academics

The UConn Huskies football team will be down backup QB Marvin Washington and linebacker Kevon Jones for the rest of the year, with the two needing to focus on academics.

Jones, a former East Hartford High School star, had been playing well, but UConn football Head Coach Randy Edsall felt the decision was necessary.

“You know, he had too much on his plate…A true freshman coming in from East Hartford…Worked and tried to do everything he could. But I saw a young man struggling. Struggling a little bit academically, struggling on the field. It’s too much. So, guess what? As head coach, I’ve got to make a decision. So, I take the football away from him, ’cause the academics is more important…”

The UConn Huskies and the Southern Methodist University Mustangs kick off at 12 noon on Saturday in East Hartford.
