PORTLAND, Conn. (WTNH) — Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire at the old Elmcrest Hospital site in Portland Wednesday morning.

The City of Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 7073 and Portland Fire Department were dispatched to 69 Marlborough Street for reports of a structure fire.

Upon arrival, fire crews found the back of the property fully involved.

The building has been vacant for years, Portland officials reported. The overgrowth and narrow pathways made it difficult for fire crews to get into the location. Officials said it took crews two hours to bring the fire under control.

No word yet on if anyone was injured.

The intersection of Main Street and Marlborough Street was closed during the incident.

The fire is under investigation by the Portland and State Fire Marshal’s office.
