KILLINGWORTH, Conn. (WTNH) — One woman has died in a multi-car crash on Route 81 in Killingworth on Tuesday.

Police stated that the crash occurred while one car, a Ford Explorer, was traveling northbound on Route 81. A second car, a Toyota Yaris, swerved into the northbound lane, crossing over the center median. The driver of the Toyota lost control of the car, and struck the Ford head-on, according to the accident report.

The driver of the first car was taken to the Shoreline Clinic in Westbrook. Police have not stated the extent of their injuries at this time.

The second driver, identified by police as Martha Bernard, 79, from Middletown was also taken to the Shoreline Clinic but was pronounced dead due to her injuries.

Bernard had a passenger in her car at the time of the crash, said police. The passenger was transported to LifeStar and taken to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, but their injuries are also unknown.
